SPORTS MEDICINE & ARTHROSCOPY: ACL TEAR
NJ orthopedist Robert A. Kayal, MD specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopy, including the repair of injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Female athletes are slightly more prone to sustain an ACL injury, but the condition is fairly common to both genders. The ACL stabilizes the knee, and may be injured during activities like soccer, hockey, basketball, running or skating. Over 60 thousand ACL reconstructions are performed in the U.S. each year.
About Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injuries
The ACL connects the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia), and injuries occur when an athlete’s knee is twisted, forced to the side, or hyperextended. After a partial or total ACL tear, patients often experience knee buckling, pain and weakness, swelling, and joint instability. Sometimes the ligament actually tears away a piece of the bone. This is called an “avulsion fracture.” ACL injuries may also be accompanied by other injuries, such as cartilage or meniscus damage.
ACL Injury Treatment at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC
Kayal Orthopaedic Center’s sports medicine surgeons diagnose an ACL tear by taking a thorough medical history, examining the painful knee, and potentially requesting MRI or x-ray films. Partially torn ACLs may heal rest, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medication. Severe or total tears most often require surgical intervention—especially for patients who wish to return to sports and activity. During ACL surgery, sports medicine specialists replace the damaged ligament with a tendon graft, which stabilizes the knee and reduces pain. ACL surgery may also be done arthroscopically—through small incisions—to expedite rehab and reduce scarring.
Whether you’re a recreational or serious athlete, severely traumatic injuries may require more extensive surgery. Dr. Robert A. Kayal and his team of sports medicine physicians will examine your injury and create a treatment plan that suits your lifestyle and recovery requirements.
