SPORTS MEDICINE & ARTHROSCOPY: BURSITIS
Renowned NJ sports medicine surgeon Dr. Robert A. Kayal treats bursitis and other inflammatory injuries that hinder athletic performance. Bursitis is a painful condition that can impact many joints, including shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Bursitis occurs in varying degrees, and requires tailored treatment based upon severity. The physicians at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC are experts at providing patient-specific treatment plans that eliminate bursitis pain and quickly return athletes to the field or court.
What is Bursitis?
Bursae are fluid sacs that cushion tendons, bones and ligaments around the joints. Bursitis results when excessive amounts of fluid are produced in these sacs. Fluid buildup can happen in two different ways: first, through repetitive motion, and second, through a traumatic event that causes rapid bursitis onset. For recreational and serious athletes, bursitis can be very detrimental to sports performance. In some cases, bursitis causes minor ache and joint stiffness. However, more severe cases result in debilitating stiffness and immobility, as well as aching and shooting pain during movement. Patients may also experience swelling and redness of the affected area.
Upon description of the pain, a qualified sports medicine team diagnoses bursitis by (1) conducting a thorough examination, and (2) identifying localized swelling, pain and tenderness at the affected joint.
Treatment for Bursitis
Surgery is rarely needed for bursitis. Treatment consists of ceasing repetitive motion for a period of time; then icing, elevating and immobilizing the joint. Anti-inflammatory medications may also help. If bursitis continues, the sports medicine experts at Kayal Orthopaedic Center may inject a steroid into the region, which reduces inflammation and irritation. When conservative treatments are not effective, surgery may be necessary to drain excess fluid or remove damaged tissue.
