SPORTS MEDICINE & ARTHROSCOPY: MUSCLE STRAINS
The sports medicine specialists at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC treat a full range of muscle strains in athletes and active individuals. Caused by overstretching, muscle strains are the result of minor to severe muscle fiber tears that lead to pain, stiffness, bruising and discoloration around the affected region.
While athletes are not the only patients we see with muscle strains, they are more at risk for injury. When the body undergoes physical stress and muscles are overused or pushed beyond their limits, strains can occur.
Treatment for Muscle Strain
The first and most conservative treatment for a muscle strain is rest, ice, compression and elevation. The RICE method is designed to reduce inflammation, lower pain, and allow the injury to begin healing. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications are also useful for keeping pain and swelling under control.
Patients with more severe muscle pain may be suffering from a fracture, ligament sprain or other injury. If you are unable to put weight on the injured area, or there is noticeable tenderness and redness, seek medical assistance. The sports medicine surgeons at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC are experts in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of sports- and activity-related conditions. After examining the affected area and discussing your medical history, they will recommend imaging and/or treatment plans tailored to the severity of your muscle injury.
